Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2022

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign raising awareness of the impact of breast cancer and how it affects us.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed around the world. Every year in the UK, around 55,000 women and 370 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about reducing the number of deaths caused by breast cancer each year, by educating people on how to spot the signs and catch the disease early on.

Don’t forget to touch, look, check

More than a third of women don’t check their breasts for signs of breast cancer. Following this method can help you spot the signs early.

Touch: Can you feel anything new or unusual?

Look: Does anything look different?

Check: Visit your GP to discuss any changes

Did you know?

Did you know that men can be affected by breast cancer too?

Breast cancer in men is rarer than it is in women, with only 370 men diagnosed with breast cancer each year. However, men are still susceptible to breast cancer too, which is why it’s so important for everyone to be body aware.

Most men who are diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 60, although younger men can also be affected. Male breast cancer can also be caused by having a family history of cancer.

The symptoms of breast cancer in men are similar to the symptoms in women. If you have any concerns at all about breast cancer, please visit your GP.

#WearItPink on the 21 October!

The UK breast cancer charity Breast Cancer Now runs an annual campaign fundraising money towards life-changing breast cancer research and support. This year, the event is happening on Friday 21 October.

Wear It Pink encourages all participants to don bright pink outfits and take part in fundraising activities such as cake sales, quizzes, and other sponsored challenges to fund a potentially life-saving research breakthrough.

If you’d like to get involved in Wear It Pink next Friday and you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few ideas and activities you can get involved with:

  • Organise a cake sale
  • Set up a lemonade stand
  • Run a quiz night
  • Throw a ‘pink party’ – everything is exclusively pink!
  • Go for a charity run or walk

All these ideas are the perfect fundraising opportunity to get people involved and raise money towards a good cause.

No matter how you choose to raise awareness for breast cancer this month, don’t forget to #WearItPink!
