For the first instalment of the series, we’ve been talking to Joanne Plumb from Joanne Plumb Knitwear. Joanne Plumb designs and makes women’s everyday knitwear, as well as garments that can be worn from day into evening.
Joanne sells tops, dresses, trousers, hats, scarves, and coats in the season’s colours featuring eye-catching finishing touches. Every garment by Joanne is individually handmade using wool, cotton and cashmere yarns woven and stitched.
Her shop at Gabriel’s Wharf has hundreds of garments available in all sizes and colours. Joanne will even produce a garment of your own design.
Joanne is a knitwear designer with a Masters degree in Constructed Textiles. She makes and produces all her fabric and creates garments out of them, and she’s had her boutique in Gabriel’s Wharf for 20 years.
Joanne uses cotton, linen, merino, mohair, cashmere, and pure wool on her knitting machine when making her fabric, before she cuts, sews, and irons it into a piece of knitwear. Her knitwear is created in an array of colours – most yarns come in nearly 20 to 30 colours, so you’ll never find dull colours in her shop!
What Joanne likes the most about being a part of Gabriel’s Wharf is the tight-knit community between the shop holders and her regular customers.
