Parents gathered at a fantastic live event to celebrate young volunteers who are the heart of Community Programmes at Coin Street.
How wonderful it was for volunteer student tutors and young people (who also volunteer in the neighbourhood) to meet in person at the Star and Jack Petchey Awards. For some people this event was the first time they had met face to face due to lockdown safety procedures!
The evening was co-hosted by Kefira, one of the Young Leaders at Coin Street who was a natural at presenting!

Since March 2020, the weekly Upgrade Yourself tutoring sessions have supported 40 young people who had regular online tutoring. Activities with tutors included help with homework and revision during Covid.
The volunteer tutors who are dedicated students themselves, commit their time as part of an ongoing partnership with Westminster School. Other volunteer tutors include university students and people who live or work locally.
Although many may be tired of staring at screens, it’s agreed that Zoom is a boon, when it enables young people to keep up with their education and virtual connections.
Many across the SE1 neighbourhood have been helped by young volunteers across other programmes, including those involved in food deliveries, Easter Camp, and supporting older people.
Not everyone could pick up their Coin Street Star Award. But they will receive theirs with a massive Thank You!
Volunteers bring skills and experiences and we couldn’t run programmes without them! It’s a win-win too. Many volunteers learn new things which can help at school, home and in the community.
The celebration also recognised those awarded the Jack Petchey Achievement Award over the last 18 months.
The Jack Petchey Foundation was set up by Sir Jack Petchey to inspire and motivate young people across London and Essex to do their best and reach their full potential. So, we celebrated commitment, engagement and support for other young people and presented Jack Petchey Medallions and certificates.
I’m very proud of the work we did on the films. I’m excited to use my Jack Petchey Award to do something fun with the rest of the youth group

Danny, one of our youth workers was also given a Jack Petchey Leaders Award for work with local young people. A huge thank you to Jack Petchey for continuing to support young people and Coin Street.
